I Can't Believe I'm Even Complaining About This, But:

Now that my Danish language class is coming to a close, I'm faced with this new and unfamiliar challenge: oodles of free time. I've been going to school four-five days a week since, well, I was five years old, and I've had a part-time job for the past three years straight. And now here I am with class only twice a week and no job. What the hell am I going to do with my free time? What can I possibly do that doesn't involve being a hermit watching movies in my room, or spending copious amounts of kroner doing touristy things and/or shopping? And what do the locals do, anyway?

My solutions, so far:
  • I've signed up to volunteer at Studenterhuset, a student café-slash-bar that's run mostly by volunteering students from KU (my university) and DIS, an American exchange university. I'll work three times a month (starting in February) in exchange for free coffee, beer, and admission to concerts held there. It's an awesome place right downtown, and it houses a lot of international students.
  • I'll make sure to familiarize myself with the various neighborhoods of CPH and nail down favorite cafés, restaurants and bars.
  • I'll bike. I really enjoy it. Not the cold wind part or numb hands part. But the rest.
  • I'll take pictures, good pictures.
  • I'll blog! I'm having a lot of fun with this. And I hope I keep it up and something good comes from it (I idolize A Cup of Jo and Love Taza).
  • I'm stealing this idea from my friend Sarah: I'm going to make a list of places that I want to go in CPH and make sure I go to at least one per week. Hopefully using this.
  • I'll travel! On the the to-do list: Vienna next week (flight booked!), London/Belfast in March, I think, Amsterdam in April (with mom and Rochelle!), and somewhere in there hopefully hopefully Italy, France and Spain. And you know, I'm probably just gonna pop over to Sweden (20 minutes away!) on the occasional weekend.
  • I'll talk to my mentor, or other Danish friends of mine, about what fun things they do. I can imagine lots of things to do in the springtime. But until then, what is there to do outdoors?
  • Cooking and baking! I love having time for it. Now I just have to find inexpensive ingredients.
Any other ideas? Share, please!

  1. Certainly do take advantage of seeing more of Europe. Write more about your experiences and reflections on what you are learning about other cultures. And have fun.

  2. Sounds good to me -- way to go finding a place to volunteer already. So are you in school at KU yet? But you just have class 2 days a week?
